What can a Professional Organizer do for me?

A Professional Organizer can meet with you to discuss your needs. If  you decide to employ the services of a Professional Organizer then the organizer can help you get your life back into order or merely improve the processes that you already have in place. At the initial consultations you decide what the results of the project should look like. You will discuss what your most important needs are and create goals and an action plan together. You will both agree on the next steps and decide on a date to start.

Why can't I do this myself?

In some cases, you can. However, in most cases you simply don't have the time. Professional Organizers have an area of expertise that you have not had the time to develop. Not only can they organize for you but they can teach you new tricks to save time, become more efficient, and handle the endless onslaught of clutter and paper in your lives. Think of it as like going to the gym: your personal trainer teaches you the best exercises and equipment for you. The trainer customizes a gym workout just for you. A Professional Organizer customizes an organizing workout and maintenance program for you too.

Is there a Certification process?

No. Currently there is no certification process. However, the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) in the U.S. is working on a process that may be available within the next year. In order to ensure that your Professional Organizer is qualified, scrutinize their web site carefully, follow up on references and referrals and seek an organizer who belongs to a national association such as Professional Organizers in Canada (POC) and is bound by a code of ethics.

What is the cost?

This depends. Professional Organizers usually charge an hourly rate depending on the type of services that are offered, the type of client and the client's location. In some cases, set rates for particular jobs or projects can be set ahead of time. A payment plan is set at the initial consultation and a deposit is required.

How can I be certain of confidentiality?

Professional Organizers that are members of POC, operate under a strict code of ethics. They respect a clients desire for privacy due to the private nature of many of the jobs. Most Organizers will offer a Agreement of Confidentiality that can be signed together. An Organizer will ask permission to take pictures, show pictures and use you as a referral.

How does a Professional Organizer get clients?

Referrals. Almost all clients come from a network of referrals. This is how you can ensure that the Organizer is professional and thorough. As with many things, advertising is important but not the main source of new clients.

How do I become a Professional Organizer?

Do you love organizing and everyone says you are good at it? You can start by organizing your family and friends. Join your local chapter of POC and attend their events.
